444    HART, JAMES FAMILY (Stovall)

Location - off Hwy 15 in Stovall about 0.4 mile into the woods.

      Coordinates: 36d 26m 39.6s N; 78d 34m 45.5s W Click here for Online Maps

Directions: Take Hwy 15 north to Stovall; large brick church on hill on left; turn left just before church and follow path into woods (will pass Luther Vaughan family cemetery on left); continue straight to end of path; house will be in front of you and cemetery is to right of house in edge of woods.

James Hart married Rebecca Graves in 1789 and established a home in the Stovall area. The family cemetery is to the right of an old house in the edge of the woods. An area about 1/3 acre is covered with periwinkle. Fallen trees, much debris and trash make it somewhat difficult to get around in it. We were accompanied by Winston Adcock, who lives on the highway, and has been familiar with the area for years. He stated that it has been some years since he was back there, but showed us a spot about in the middle of the periwinkle where he said he had seen one grave stone and lots of fieldstones marking graves. Today, no grave markers of any kind could be found, but depressions were visible.

Canvassed by Jessie McLam and Mildred Goss, February 2009.
